A finely painted portrait of a bearded gentleman, by the listed French Parisian artist Jules Richomme (1818-1903).

Jules Richomme was a portrait, landscape and history painter born and educated in Paris; he exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1833 onwards where he won a 3rd class medal at the 1840 Salon & second class medal at the 1842 Salon.

In 1867 he was was honoured by the French government with a Chevalier de la Legion (the highest French order of merit for military or civilian recognition), going on to be selected by the government to paint and decorate the ┬áTheatre d’Italienne in Cherbourg.

Richomme lived & worked in Paris, where he died in 1903.
