1896 Colonial Era Australian Beachscape – James Swinton Diston (1857-1940)


Beautifully atmospheric Beachscape painting by the respected & listed Australian colonial landscape artist, James Swinton Diston (1857-1940).

Oil on Canvas, signed & dated lower right  ‘J Swinton Diston 1896’. Cleaned & restored.

Measures: 33cm high, 64cm wide.

Born in Scotland on New Years Day in 1857, Swinton Diston studied fine art at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh; building a reputation for himself as a fine landscape artist. He exhibited many of his works at the Royal Academy & Royal Scottish Academy before emigrating to Australia in 1886, aged 29 years; first settling in Perth before taking up residence in Melbourne, where he would live for the rest of his years.

During the early 1900’s James Swinton Diston travelled extensivley throughout Australia, painting its landscapes and exhibiting his works in major Australian cities and towns. He died in St Kilda aged 83 years old.
